Discovering the Advantages of Wisdom Teeth Removal

April 30, 2024

The arrival of wisdom teeth, or third molars, can be a significant milestone in one's dental journey. These late bloomers typically emerge through the gums at the back of the mouth between ages 17 and 25, coinciding with the period of life known as the "Age of Wisdom." This is why these teeth are often called "wisdom teeth."

While some individuals may experience no issues with their wisdom teeth, others may encounter problems that require extraction. In fact, for many young adults, pain from emerging or impacted wisdom teeth is the primary reason they seek urgent dental care.

Signs and Symptoms of Problematic Wisdom Teeth

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Damage to adjacent teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay

With limited space in the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are more prone to problems. While our early human ancestors may have had large enough jaws to accommodate these teeth comfortably, the modern human jaw has become smaller over time. This evolutionary change is thought to be due to our softer diets and larger brains.

An impacted wisdom tooth occurs when it remains submerged under gum tissue or bone, unable to erupt into its proper position. Depending on the amount of overlying tissue, impactions can be classified in several different ways. If a wisdom tooth is covered by gum tissue, it's known as a soft tissue impaction. When a wisdom tooth remains partially or fully obstructed by bone, it's referred to as a bony impaction.

Besides the prevalence of impacted wisdom teeth and poor alignment, maintaining good oral hygiene for these teeth can be challenging. Positioned at the very back of the mouth, they are particularly susceptible to bacterial accumulation, dental disease, and infection. Our practice may recommend extracting third molars to help reduce the risk of these oral health issues, preserving the overall well-being of your gums and neighboring teeth. By eliminating the need to navigate hard-to-reach areas, it's easier and healthier to maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine.

In rare cases, wisdom teeth may contribute to the formation of cysts or tumors around the impacted tooth. These issues can cause significant damage to the jawbone and surrounding teeth.

At our office, we closely monitor the development, positioning, and health of unerupted and erupted wisdom teeth at each dental checkup visit. For teens and adults of all ages, we often recommend the extraction of potentially problematic wisdom teeth before a painful or complex emergency arises. We also provide prompt treatment and recommend extractions as necessary if symptoms and problems develop.
